Varsity Baseball: Lizotte leads Wizards past Chargers, 3-2!
Led by the pitching of senior Richard Lizotte, the Wizards defeated the Chargers of Chariho, 3-2, to even their Division I-South record at 2-2.
Lizotte, who threw 64 of 91 pitches for strikes, allowed only one earned run on four hits while striking out 12 in seven innings of work.
Down 1-0, the Wizards tied the game in the top of the third inning when Derek Hebert broke out of a season long hitting slump with a lead off double to right center. Jeff Sampaio, then, laid down a bunt toward the third base line. As Charger pitcher Dave Northup tried to throw out Sampaio, the throw which Sampaio beat easily got by the second baseman who was late covering scoring Hebert. Two outs later, Charley Parent walked and pinch runner Dominic Bisceglio stole second, putting runners at second and third base. The Wizards, however, could not get a timely hit as Northup induced a pop out to second base to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Wizards scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead. With one out, Sampaio reached first on a wild pitch after striking out. After Sampaio stole second base, senior Aaron Richards hit a r.b.i. double to left center. Richards moved to third base one pitch later on a wild pitch and scored when Tim Parente hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Chargers scored one run when Taylor Hackley singled, moved to second on an error, and scored with two out on Frank Glawser double.
The Chargers, however, would not reach base safely for the remainder of the game. Richard Lizotte not only retired the last seven batters of the game, but struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to enable the Wizards to pick up their second league road win of the year.

JV Baseball: WWJV wins league opener, 5-1!
Led by the pitching of juniors Amine Malki and Kurtis Melvin, the Wizards JV won their league opener, 5-1, over the Mariners of Narragansett. The junior tandem, who recorded 16 strikeouts, simply overpowered the freshman & sophomore line up of the Mariners.
Malki, who threw 42 of his 63 pitches for strikes, struck out nine, walked two, and allowed no hits in four innings of work. Melvin, who worked the final three innings, struck out seven and allowed only three hits.
In the bottom of the first inning, Domenic Bisceg led off with a single, stole second base, and scored on a triple by Garrett DeBlois. Deblois, later scored on Matt Grosso's r.b.i. single for a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Wizards added on two more runs. After Kurtis Melvin and Jim Thornton both singled, Nate Lacroix followed with an infield grounder which was misplayed allowing Melvin to score. Chris Viveiros followed with a single moving Thornton to third. Thornton, then, scored on Cam Genest's r.b.i. groundout.
In the fifth inning, Matt Grosso singled with two outs, moved to second on an error, and scored on Thornton's second hit of the game.
Offensively, the Wizards received hits from Dom Bisceglio (2/3, one double), Max Motroni (1/3), GarrettDeBlois (2/3, one triple, 1 r.b.i.), Matt Grosso (2/3, 1 r.b.i.), Kurtis Melvin (1/3), Jim Thornton (2/3, 1 r.b.i.), and Chris Viveiros (1/3).
Defensively, the Wizards received a solid game from catcher Nick Carney (two foul pop-ups). Also, the Wizards received a great play from first baseman, Brent Reed, who threw a strike to third baseman, Nate Grandchamp to cut down a runner.
